Our Mission

Many people face housing insecurities. This can increase the likelihood of other challenges in life. Huck's House helps solve these challenges by offering safe and supportive housing to help with fresh new start. Our desire is that they win in life...

What is shared housing?

Shared housing is defined as two or more people who live in one permanent rental housing unit, sharing costs associated with maintaining housing such as rent and utilities.

Advantages of Shared Housing

Reducing the rent burden is often the most important benefit to shared housing arrangements - and it can be the only way some extremely low-income renters can obtain and sustain housing in a high-rent community.

A native of West Virginia, Sheila Giles was born in the city of Welch, located in McDowell County, WV. The youngest of ten siblings, Sheila and her twin sister were never short of company growing up in such a large family. Sheila worked hard and focused on her studies, graduating from Northfolk High School, and moving on to attend Bluefield State College in 1983 on a basketball scholarship. During her time at Bluefield State, Sheila pursued and obtained 3 degrees, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, an Associate of Science Degree in Law Enforcement, and an Associate of Science Degree in Recreational Leadership.

Sheila began her professional career in 1990 as a Police Officer for Duke University. In 1997, she left the Duke Police Department to become an ALE Agent. She held her position as an agent until 1999 when she was chosen to be an ABC Officer with the Mecklenburg County ABC Board. She retired from her position with the ABC Board in 2020 with over 20 years of honorable service to the county.

In September of 2000, Sheila married her best friend, Mr. Willie L Giles. Twenty-two years later she says if, given the option, she would choose him all over again. Sheila and Willie have a beautiful family and always make time to spend with each other. Family is always first to Sheila and her life as well as her career history are a direct reflection of that dedication.

Sheila uses her General Instructors Certificate and her experience as an ABC Officer to teach the BLET ABC Laws Rules and Regulations Course for Central Piedmont Community College. Sheila also invests in real estate with her desire to help build communities, one house at a time. She has a hunger to break the generational curses stemming from not prioritizing ownership which plagues our communities to this day. Her passion for people shines through her work and gives the people around her the peace of mind to navigate through life’s challenges!
